Our Story
Our journey in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, began back in 2003. While serving full-time in the Armed Forces and the NHS, we fell completely in love with a rather neglected Welsh smallholding. We bought the property with a long-term dream: to carefully restore it into our future family home and build a peaceful holiday retreat for others to enjoy when we eventually retired.
The extensive renovations turned out to be a far bigger—and much more expensive—adventure than we had ever anticipated! For a decade, we balanced the immense demands of our public service careers with structural building work, land management, and endless updates. In 2013, that decade of grit and passion paid off when we officially opened the doors to Basel Cottage Holidays.
A Living Labour of Love
We have never stopped improving. Over the past 23 years we have lived here, we have continuously upgraded our home, Little Hall, the cottage and our 17 acres of stunning Welsh countryside to ensure our facilities remain luxurious, modern, and perfectly peaceful.
In 2022, we reached our final milestone, officially retiring from our first careers to dedicate ourselves full-time to the holiday let and our guests. Having spent our working lives looking after the public, hospitality comes naturally to us. We traded active duty and care in the community for welcoming old friends and meeting new faces.

We are also proud to offer dogs the best holidays of their lives! Having had dogs all our lives, we know pets are part of the family, which is why we provide a truly dog-friendly paradise where your four-legged companions can feel right at home. On arrival, along with ourselves, our own gorgeous dogs, Barney and Teddy aka ‘The Basel Boys’ will also be on hand to welcome you and show you around so you can make the most of your holiday here at Basel Cottage.
